The recent discovery of a new Jurassic bird fossil, Zhengheornis buyu, has shed light on the evolutionary transition of birds from their dinosaur ancestors. This fossil, found in China, reveals a unique feature: a short tail with 15 vertebrae, distinct from the long, bony tails of dinosaurs. This finding challenges previous assumptions about the simultaneous development of short tails and pygostyles in early birds. Instead, it suggests a stepwise evolutionary process where the reduction in tail vertebrae preceded the fusion of the tail bones into a pygostyle. This discovery is significant as it provides evidence for a gradual transition, filling a gap in the fossil record. The fossil's body mass, estimated at 74 to 163 grams, is also notable, making it one of the smallest adult non-pygostylian theropods known. This finding highlights the diversity of early bird species and their varying adaptations, indicating a major adaptive radiation by the end of the Jurassic period. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, reconciles long-standing debates about the timing of early bird diversification, offering a more nuanced understanding of avian evolution.
